#MonsterMovieMonday: Nightmare Castle (1965)

Ho-wdy, Kinky Kreeps!

Just another #MonsterMonday here at Kinky Ho-rror! This week, we’re worshiping at the Crimson Altar of the High Priestess of Gothic Ho-rror, Barbara Steele!

Ms. Steele is, without a doubt, THE Queen of cl-Ass-Sick Ho-rror Cinema. Her piercing eyes, her haunting presence, her ghost-like grace…Barbara always looked like she was about to Steele your soul! No coffin could hold her and no force on Earth could stop her! She held her own against the likes of Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, Christopher Lee, and Barnabas Collins! Both ho-rror heroine and ho-rrific monster, Steele is a true fright icon.

Today’s terror tale is Nightmare Castle and it features Goddess Steele at her most frightful. The Gothic Queen does double duty as both the doe-eyed Jenny and the ghostly Muriel… and kills it as both!

It’s an old-fashioned sort of story: castles, romance, and… ghosts! A cozy little tale that’s just perfect for this most ghoulish of seasons. With mad science, fiendish torture, surreal nightmares, and an Ennio Morricone score that sounds like it was composed by The Phantom of the Opera, this is film is pure Gothic bliss. And if Steele’s creeptacular performance doesn’t frighten you, you’re already dead!
Do you dare spend the night at… Nightmare Castle?!

Happy #MonsterMovieMonday, Kreeps!! 🙂

“They’re Coming to Get You, Barbara(s)”.

Hiya, Ho-rror Ho-mies!! 🙂 I took a few days off to spend Cryptmas with the fam, but now it’s time to start creeping my way back into the real world (and posting mode! :)). This week, two of the Screamiest, Dreamiest Queens of all time both celebrate birthdays: Ms. Barbara Crampton (December 27) and the ultra-legendary Ms. Barbara Steele (December 29). I can’t think of a better cure for any potential post-Ho-liday blues than lusting after these greatly gifted, gore-geous ghouls…Happy Birthdays, Blood-Soaked Beauties!! (Both of you clean up really well… ;)) xoxo

Ps- I was lucky enough to get to dork it out with both these lovelies this year. <3

Barbara Steele: The TRUE Supreme. <3333

Last weekend I actually got the chance to meet the Scream Queeniest of All Scream Queens, the Beyond Legendary “Predatory Bitch Goddess” (her words!! :)), Miss Barbara Steele. *infinity swooooooooooooon*

In person (and at age 77, no less!), she’s the epitome of timeless elegance and beauty she’s always been onscreen. I am honored and eXXXtremely grateful that I got to meet her and tell her personally how influential she has been to me. (And she even signed one of my lobby cards…Tee hee!!! :))

Ms. Steele did a Q&A at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, following a screening of the gothic Ho-rror puppet short she lends her voice to, The Mill at Calder’s End (which is every bit as awesome as that description implies… ;)).

Absolutely check out this hauntingly creepy, animated scary tale if you haven’t yet, and be sure to add these other Barbara Steele classics to your Must View Queue, too:

She can also be seen in the upcoming film Lost River (along with Matt MotherFreakin’ Smith!! :)), which is set to be released April 10.

No matter what era the film, or what role she’s playing, this Greatest of Gothic Goddesses will always Steele your heart… 😉 #WCF xoxoxo

Ah! My (Gothic) Goddess!

“She’s got an incredible strength and yet a mystery which is something you don’t learn in acting school. It’s just something that you have or you don’t have. And she has it.”

– Tim Burton

Wishing a super duper Happy Birthday to the Queeniest of all Scream Queens, Barbara Steele! Ms. Steele is a “haunting, beguiling figure who’s ethereal beauty will linger in your mind long after the credits roll on one of her many gothic thrillers”. How many other actresses have stolen the spotlight away from Vincent Price onscreen, after all? That takes tremendous talent, gothic gorgeousness, and balls of Steele, son!! 😉

To celebrate Ms. Steele’s Born Day, enjoy this small sampling of her spine-tingling stupendousness, won’t you? 🙂
